Because of how advanced technology is, it can be tricky to spot images manipulated or created using AI. In an Instagram video, reposted from Renee Carrot, we discussed how dating sites use AI-generated profile pictures, which can be misleading and lead to misinformed decisions. This article will provide tips on how to detect if an image is AI-generated.

How to Detect AI-Generated Images

  1. Weird Fingers and Hands: AI-generated images are notoriously bad at rendering hands. Look for anomalies such as six fingers, extra joints, or fingers blending together. Pay close attention to the details.
  2. Blurry or Abnormal Backgrounds: AI generators often blur the background entirely to hide imperfections. If the background is fully blurred or lacks discernible details, it might be AI-generated.
  3. Misaligned Architecture: Look for inconsistencies in structures. Walls may be curved, ceilings might slope unnaturally, and furniture could appear disproportionate. These anomalies indicate AI manipulation.
  4. Unnatural Hair: AI often smooths out hair and gives it an unnatural glossy look. Hair might appear in impossible forms or have radical textures. This is also true for other human features like teeth, eyes, and ears.
  5. Overly Rendered Appearance: AI images tend to be overly sharp and glossy with a very smooth or crisp foreground against a blurry background. This artificial sharpness is a key indicator.
  6. Gibberish Text: Text in AI-generated images often doesn't make sense or is gibberish. This is a clear sign that the image might be AI-generated.

Tools to Detect AI-Generated Images

  • Is it AI
  • Hugging Face
  • Hive Moderation
  • Winston AI

These tools can help determine if an image is AI-generated. Numerous other detectors are available online and are continually being developed.

As the world becomes more dependent on AI technology, it's important to inform ourselves about these technologies' uses. Especially during critical times like elections, being able to detect AI-generated images helps maintain integrity and accuracy in the information we consume. Staying curious and vigilant is key.
